How Hybrid Solar Panels and Battery Storage Works…
The solar panels absorb sunlight during daylight hours and convert it into electrical
energy. This electricity is then sent through solar cables to the inverter unit. The solar
panels do not require direct sunlight as they are now super efficient.
The inverter then regulates the electrical charge produced by the solar panels and converts it into the correct voltage to power appliances in your home (240 volts). It then sends this regulated power to your electricity meter and fuse board – just like the electricity coming to your home from the grid
Your electricity meter then measures the energy coming from your solar system and to and from the grid. When your solar panels are producing more energy than your home is using the battery will begin to charge. Once the battery is full, your meter will measure excess power going back to the grid and you will be paid for it automatically. Your fuse board will distribute the solar power around your home to your sockets and lights etc.
Your appliances draw on this power and operate as normal using either solar energy alone or a mixture of energy from your battery and solar energy. The system will automatically use solar energy and battery energy first to power your home and then take a little extra from the grid if required. After the sun has set the appliances in your home will be powered by your battery which stores solar energy for night time use. A small percentage of the battery power will be reserved so that it may be used in the event of a power cut to enable essential appliances and devices to keep running such as your fridge freezer and lights etc.
Your unused solar power is sent back into the grid to help power other homes locally and currently you will receive 15 pence per unit of power that you export to the grid. All of these functions are fully automated.
